Serenoa repens has been used in arjuvedic medicine for thousands of years. Saw palmetto blocks 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT (5α-dihydrotestosterone). DHT is the molecule responsible for hair loss and also contributes to prostate enlargement. Research has also shown anti-inflammatory and anti-estrogenic effects.
